Pedal Info
While many bass players love having a huge stack of amplifiers behind them, just as many are content to run direct and be spared the hassle that comes with micing (and transporting) amplifiers. For bassists who prefer going direct into a PA, there's no shortage of DI boxes. If you're looking for a small, versatile solution, though, the Electro-Harmonix Bass Metaphors is a viable choice, offering a wide array of tonal options.
Essentially a channel strip in an effects pedal format, the Bass Metaphors is a combination preamp, equalizer, distortion, compressor, and DI in one compact package. The unit offers individual controls for level, distortion, eq level, treble, bass, and dry mix. A toggle switch activates the compressor.
There are also footswitches for unit bypass as well as and independent distortion bypass switch. Knowing that many users will choose to use the Metaphors pedal directly into a mixer or PA, the unit conveniently offers both 1/4 and XLR outputs. As with other Electro-Harmonix Bass pedals, a direct out is also provided. While the Metaphors does not run on batteries due to its power consumption needs, an Electro-Harmonix adapter is included.
User Reviews
User reviews of the Bass Metaphors are mixed. Many players praise the pedal's versatility and its ability to replace an entire bass rig by going direct. For the price, numerous users believe it represents an excellent bargain, offering numerous standard bass effects in one box.
However, several users complain that the Bass Metaphors is noisy, especially when used directly in front of an amplifier. The distortion gets mixed reviews, with some praising and others scorning it.
It seems the best strategy is to buy the pedal from a deal with a generous return policy so you can see if it works well with your rig, since numerous players praise the pedal's performance.
