The folks at Tech 21 know a thing or two about tone. After all, the founder Andrew Barta was the inventor of the famed SansAmp, cherished by guitarists and bassists alike for over twenty years. Since the original Sansamp, Barta and crew have created scores of effects and amplifiers aimed at guitarists and bassists alike. The Tech 21 Bass Boost Fuzz is part of their growing Boost-series of pedals and is aimed squarely at bass players wanting a bit more growl in their bottom end.
Like all Tech 21 products, the Bass Boost Fuzz is all analog. The goal was to produce a fuzz pedal with vintage Germanium tone and modern reliability. The pedal sports controls for Level, Tone, Drive, +Clean (mixes clean signal with fuzz), and Boost. The independently switchable boost provides up to 21dB of post after the effects and is usable apart from the fuzz. Separate LEDS indicate the status of either the fuzz or the boost. The pedal can be powered by either a 9V battery or Boss-type power supply.
User Reviews
User reviews of the Tech 21 Bass Boost Fuzz are nearly all positive. The only minor complaint that the fuzz itself could be a bit more aggressive. However, the fuzz was designed to emulate vintage Germanium fuzz pedals, not contemporary over-the-top pedals.
Still, most users find the range of fuzz to be entirely satisfactory (and unlike vintage fuzzes, more predictable). Perhaps the most celebrated features amongst users is the 21dB boost, which works independently of the fuzz switch, so many players are pleased that they can use the Boost Fuzz to replace a dedicated boost pedal.
